V Power!: Nay Aug Park Holiday Light Show

The annual Light Show needs volunteers and we’d love to help them out! Power! Scranton is looking for people from our membership to represent Power! Shifts are 2 hours and it is preferred that there be at least 2 people at the table at any given time. Volunteers will collect donations and pass along info to visitors driving thru the park

Volunteer Opportunity: Santa Parade

Power! Scranton is looking for volunteers from our members to help out with the 18th Annual Greater Scranton Jaycees Santa Parade!

The Parade will kick off on the 300 Block of Spruce Street at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20th, 2010.  Volunteers are needed – for more information you can email Martina at santaparade@scrantonjaycees.org

Volunteer Opportunity: Rock United Battle of the Bands

Power! Scranton is looking for volunteers from our members to help out with the Rock United Battle of the Bands.  Help is needed distributing fliers during First Friday as well as at the event with registration, raffles, and t-shirt sales.  Please contact Tim McLain at tmclain@dxdempsey.com if you are interested in helping out!

What: Rock United Battle of the Bands
When: Friday, October 1st
Where: Whistle’s Pub and Eatery 7:30-12:30 or at the Courthouse Square before the event

Additional Info: The NEPA Battle of the Bands is coming to Whistles October 1st! All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties.

Volunteers can help out from 7:30 to 10:00, from 10:00 to 12:30 or from 7:30 to 12:30.

The official 8 participating bands are Kids on Bikes, Mouths of Babes, So Long Pluto, Stasis, Laser Sex, Blinded Passenger, Jakesway, and Champion Mode.  The winner’s prize package includes a profile in Electric City, an Interview on an Entercom radio station, a photo shoot by Michael Straub, 3 hrs. of studio time, and a Cash Prize.

All volunteers get free admission and a t-shirt.

Steamtown Original Music Showcase Returns

The Steamtown Original Music Showcase will return to downtown Scranton on September 5, 2010, featuring an array of local, regional, and national musical talent.

The event, now in its fifth year, offers music lovers and business owners the largest original music conference and event in Northeastern Pennsylvania to be held in a city.

The following venues have been confirmed for the Steamtown Original Music Showcase:

  • Kildares-119 Jefferson Ave Scranton, PA. 18503
  • The Bog-341 Adams Ave. Scranton, PA. 18503
  • Trax-700 Lackawanna Ave Scranton, PA. 18503
  • The Backyard Alehouse-521 Linden St. Scranton, PA 18503
  • Scranton Vintage Theater-119 Penn Ave Scranton, PA 18503
  • The Banshee-320 Penn Ave Scranton, PA 18503

Confirmed acts for this year include Nowhere Slow, OurAfter, Panacea, Hierosonic, BOB, Graces Downfall, The Silentreatment, Woody Browns Project, Maybe Someday, Zelazowa, Lemongelli, The Underground Saints, Jason O, Tom Graham and more.

Special clinics and panels are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Banshee will host “The Evolution of Music Distribution” with guest speaker Joe Nardone Jr. at 1 p.m.; “The Traveling Musician” at 3 p.m.; and a lesson with Michael Dudley in using MIDI in a guitar rig to connect digital processors, analog effects, and traditional tube amps, “Connecting it all together,” at 4 p.m.;

For $10, the general public can purchase a pass from any club or the showcase website and will have admission to all venues the day of the event.

Networking Happy Hour before ‘Mamma Mia’ Performance

Advance tickets for the Wine Festival at Sno Cove are still available at discount prices to POWER! Scranton members and now we have another special offer for POWER! members: The Broadway Theatre League is planning a Networking Happy Hour event at an upcoming performance of “Mamma Mia” for POWER! members.

For the price of a ticket to the Wednesday, April 21, performance, POWER! members will also get an invitation to a Happy Hour from 5:30-7 p.m. prior to the show. Happy Hour will include an open bar and snacks.

Electronics Recycling Event at Marywood University

Marywood University will host an Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in “The Pit” parking lot, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton (enter the campus off Adams Avenue and follow the signs).

Accepted items include electronic equipment that plugs in or has embedded batteries, for example:

  • computers,
  • televisions,
  • iPods, etc.

Prohibited items include:

  • microwaves,
  • smoke detectors,
  • thermometers,
  • dehumidifiers,
  • large appliances,
  • medical equipment
  • and any items that are not dry.

There will be free food, refreshments, live entertainment and a raffle.

Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser for Marley’s Mission

Next Wednesday, members of POWER! Scranton will join other local celebrities for a celebrity bartending fundraiser to benefit Marley’s Mission.

The event will be held Wednesday, March 3, from 7-10 p.m. at Goodfellas, 1212 Mulberry Street, Scranton. Marley’s Mission provides equine (horse-assisted) therapy for children victimized by physical and sexual abuse as well as disabled children.

Celebrity bartenders will be Julianne Kalasinski and Chef Kate Gabriele of POWER! Scranton; Jack DeLeo,
Unico; Eric Deabill, WBRE; and Jose the Dysfunctional Leprechaun. Your $20 donation will include pizza, wings, appetizers, beer, wine and well drinks.

Entertainment will be provided by Bees Knees and there will be basket raffles throughout the night.
