To show our support for the United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern PA, POWER! Scranton will auction four seats to their 12^th Annual Mardi Gras event at the Radisson on Friday, February 17 6-10PM.  The auction will begin today January 31, and will run till February 7.  Each seat will go to the highest bidder and all proceeds will benefit the United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern PA and their emergency food and clothing bank, Angel’s Attic.

Each ticket valued at $65 includes dinner.  The event includes everything for a complete Mardi Gras party: masks, beads, gaming tables, Dixieland jazz, fortune tellers, a basket raffle, silent auction, dancing and a cash bar.  You will also have a chance to win the grand prize of a 3 day, 2 night stay at Cove Haven Entertainment Resort.

Power! Scranton is looking for volunteers from our membership to help out with the 35^th Annual Horse Show to benefit Marley’s Mission.

Marley’s Mission currently treats nearly 40 children from across Northeastern Pennsylvania and has seven horses as well as the use of stables and fields in Lake Ariel, PA.   Marley’s Mission employs a team approach to healing children who have experienced trauma.  The treatment team includes a specially trained Trauma Therapist and an Equine Specialist.  The treatment team has been educated in the internationally recognized Equine-Assisted Therapy Model (EAP) developed by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA).

What:  35^th Annual Horse Show benefitting Marley’s Mission
When:  Saturday, June 25^th and Sunday, June 26^th
Where: The Double “A” Farm, Justus, PA

Volunteers are needed for setup on Saturday to help paint, spruce up, set flower displays and set up the Concession tent.  5 volunteers needed.

Volunteers are needed for the event on Sunday to assist at the concession stand and with the operation of the horse show itself.  10 volunteers needed.  (Shifts are from 7:30-12:30 or 12:30-5:30).

What: The 15th Annual Steamtown Marathon
When: Sunday,  October 10, 2010 (or at the Expo on the 9th)
Where: Along the course route, at the Expo (Scranton High School), or at the finish line downtown

Race info: The 26.2 mile race starts at Forest City High School and ends at couthouse square in Downtown Scranton.  We have completely sold out the event with 2,500 runners from 45 states and six countries signed up.  The race benefits St. Joseph’s Center, Scranton.  Since 1996, the marathon has donated more than $550,000 to St. Joseph’s.  In a 2009 survey of more than 8,000 runners by Runner’s World Magazine, the Steamtown Marathon was voted the 6th best overall marathon in the nation out of more than 350.

On race weekend, more than 3,000 volunteers help stage the event.  Steamtown is a 100% volunteer organization.  We have no staff. Even with the 3,000 volunteers we still need more help. All volunteers get a Steamtown t-shirt.
