![]() ![]() Carl Von Luger Steak & Seafood Carl Von Luger: A Centuries-Old Tradition in Downtown ScrantonThis spring, owner Robert Dickert opened Carl Von Luger’s Steak & Seafood at the corner of North Washington Avenue and Linden Street, bringing with him a centuries-old tradition of excellence and a rich family history in the restaurant business. Dickert named the restaurant in honor of his father Carl, nephew of Peter Luger of the famed Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn, NY. Dickert’s father ran the Luger’s steakhouse location in Long Island and Dickert himself worked there as a boy. Dickert has 28 years of experience as an executive chef at restaurants around New York City – “nothing but steakhouses” – and, for the past eight years, he has owned Great Uncle Peter’s Steakhouse in Newton Twp. He said that, ultimately, he felt limited in what he could achieve at Great Uncle Peter’s and that led to his opening Carl Von Luger’s. “We serve the same kind of steak as Peter Luger’s – that dry-aged prime beef,” Dickert said. He noted that his restaurant also offers steaks like filet mignon, that are not available at Peter Luger. And Carl Von Luger’s is not only a steakhouse. Dickert said that his restaurant gets fresh seafood deliveries four times a week and offers dozens of varieties of seafood. Their menu includes pasta dishes, burgers and homemade desserts. Carl Von Luger’s has a rotisserie in its kitchen, making chicken and turkey that is perfect for a hearty sandwich. “We serve comfort food for lunch,” Dickert said, noting that they offer many affordable menu items. “You can actually get a lunch cheaper than going to Subway.” Dickert’s goal is to offer premium dining experiences together with affordable and accessible options. “We’re very elegant but also casual,” he said. “We don’t want people to be intimidated.” Carl Von Luger’s offers a “Scranton Supper Club” that features soup/salad, entrée, dessert and drink at a special discount price and they host a jazz night each Friday beginning at 7 p.m. In keeping with his family’s tradition in the restaurant business, Dickert works at Carl Von Luger’s with his four daughters. Since opening in the spring, Dickert said Scranton has quickly taken to the new steakhouse. “The reception has been great,” Dickert said. “We brought something to Scranton that people haven’t seen since Preno’s. It was something Scranton needed.” He sees encouraging signs in the growth of downtown businesses. “The downtown is booming,” said Dickert. “I truly believe Scranton is coming back and only for the better.” |
